Vehicle equipment
Entry and display
This chapter describes all standard, country-spe‐
cific and optional equipment available for the
model series. It may therefore describe equip‐
ment and functions which are not installed in
your vehicle, for example on account of the spe‐
cial equipment selected or the country specifica‐
tion. This also applies to safety-relevant func‐
tions and systems. Please comply with the
relevant laws and regulations when using the
corresponding functions and systems.

Principle
Entry comparison
When entering names and addresses, the selec‐
tion is gradually narrowed down and possibly
supplemented with every subsequent letter en‐
tered.
iDrive brings together the functions of a number
of switches. These functions can be operated
using the Controller.
Inputs are continuously compared with the data
saved in the vehicle.
Safety note
▷ Only letters for which data is available are of‐
fered for entry.
WARNING
▷ Destination search: place names can be en‐
tered in all languages available in iDrive.
Operating integrated information systems and
communication devices during a journey may
distract you from the road. You could lose con‐
trol of the vehicle. There is a risk of accident.
Only operate the systems or devices if the traf‐
fic conditions allow you to do so. Stop if neces‐
sary and operate the systems or devices with
the vehicle at a standstill.
Enabling/disabling functions
Some menu items are preceded by a checkbox.
The box indicates whether the function is ena‐
bled or disabled. Selecting the menu item ena‐
bles or disables the function.

Status information
General
The status field is located in the top area of the
Control Display. Status information is displayed
in the form of symbols.

General
To clean the control display, follow the care in‐
structions, see page 345.
Entertainment
Symbol
Meaning
Bluetooth audio.
USB device.
If the Control Display is exposed to very high
temperatures, for example because of strong
sunlight, the brightness may be reduced and the
Control Display may even switch itself off. Nor‐
mal functions will be restored when the tempera‐
ture is reduced, for example by shading or using
the air conditioning system.
Online Entertainment.

Safety note
NOTE
Objects located in front of the Control Display
may slip and damage the Control Display.
There is a risk of material damage. Do not place
objects in front of the Control Display.

Switching on/off automatically
The control display is switched on automatically
when the vehicle is unlocked or as soon as the
control display is required for operation.
In certain situations, the control display is
switched off automatically, for example if no op‐
eration is performed on the vehicle for several
minutes.
Switching on/off manually
The Control Display can also be switched off
manually.
▷ Tilt in four directions to switch between
screens, for example.

Press the Controller or any button on the Con‐
troller to switch it back on again.

General
The buttons can be used to call up menus di‐
rectly. The Controller can be used to select
menu items and perform settings.

Press twice: shows all menu items of
the main menu.

Switching between screens
After a menu item has been selected, for exam‐
ple "iDrive settings", a new screen is displayed.
All menu items of the main menu are dis‐
played.
2. Select a menu item.
▷ Tilt the Controller to the left.
3. To move a menu item to the desired position,
tilt the Controller to the right or left.
The current screen is closed and the previ‐
ous screen is displayed.
Selecting a menu item
Highlighted menu items can be selected.

Press the button.
The previous screen is opened again.
1. Turn the Controller until the desired menu
item is highlighted.

The new screen is opened.

Adapting the menu content
The display of the "Media/Radio",
The "Options" menu is displayed.
"Communication" and "ConnectedDrive" menus
can be adapted, for example to remove the en‐
tries for unused functions from the menu.

Tap the symbol.

1. Turn the Controller: to select a letter or num‐
ber.

Deleting
All iDrive functions can be called up via the main
menu.

Press the Controller: to delete a let‐
ter or number.

lete all letters or numbers.
2. Drag the menu item to the desired position
on the right or left.
Using alphabetical lists
For alphabetical lists with more than 30 entries,
the letters for which entries exist can be dis‐
played on the left.
Selecting a menu item
Touch the required menu item.
1. Turn the Controller quickly to the left or right.
All the letters for which an entry exists are
shown on the left.
2. Select the initial letter of the desired entry.
The first entry for the selected letter is dis‐
played.
Operation by touchscreen
Dynamic content
General
The Control Display is equipped with a touch‐
screen.
Dynamic content can be displayed within the
menu items. The content in the menu items up‐
dates automatically, for example active route
guidance in the navigation.
Touch the touchscreen with your fingers. Do not
use any objects.

Owner's Handbook, can be saved to functional
bookmarks and called up directly.
Switching between screens
After a menu item has been selected, a new
screen is displayed.
The settings are saved for the current driver pro‐
file.
Saving a function
1. Select function via iDrive.
An arrow indicates that further screens can be
called up.
▷ Swipe to the left.
▷ Tap the arrow.
2.
Press and hold the desired button
until a signal sounds.
The new screen is opened.
Performing a function
Entering letters and numbers
Entry
Press the button.
The function is carried out immediately. If you
have selected a telephone number for example,
the connection will also be established.

Tap the symbol on the touchscreen.
A keyboard appears on the control display.
2. Enter the required letters and numbers.
Displaying the button
assignment
Deleting
Touch the buttons with your finger. Do not wear
gloves or use objects.
Symbol Function
Tap the symbol: to delete letter or
number.
The button assignment is displayed in the upper
area of the control display.
Tap and hold the symbol: to delete
all letters or numbers.
Clearing the button assignment
1. Press and hold buttons 1 and 8 simultane‐
ously for approximately 5 seconds.
Operating the navigation map
The navigation map can be moved via the touch‐
screen.
